Diver's Weights / Integrated Weights achieve neutral buoyancy and are essential diving and counteracting the lift from equipment like wetsuits and tanks. They allows divers to descend and maintain their desired depth with ease.

This involves:

  • Attaching diver's weights / integrated weights using a belt or integrating them into a BCD (Buoyancy Control Device)
  • Ensuring even distribution of weights
  • Adjusting the total weight according to diving conditions, such as water salinity and the thickness of the exposure suit

A critical safety measure is knowing how to quickly release the diver's weights in an emergency.

Achieving Neutral Buoyancy

  • Understand the Goal: The purpose of diver's weights is to offset the positive buoyancy from your body, wetsuit, and air tank, allowing you to reach neutral buoyancy.
  • Calculate Initial Weight: As a guideline, consider using approximately 1/10th of your body weight for a 5mm suit in saltwater, but this is merely an estimate that must be adjusted.
  • Adjust Based on Conditions: You’ll need to add more diver's weights in saltier water and less in freshwater. Thicker wetsuits will also demand additional weight.
  • Test in a Pool: It’s advisable to practice with a tank that has between 500 and 1,000 PSI to negate the buoyancy effect of a full tank during a dive.

Attaching and Securing Diver's Weights

  • Use a Weight Belt: Distribute diver's weights evenly around the belt for better balance. Secure them with keepers or by twisting the belt to prevent sliding, as detailed in Coral Wetsuits and on YouTube.
  • Use Integrated Systems: Many modern BCDs come equipped with integrated weight pockets for added comfort and balance.
  • Explore Other Systems: Alternatives include pouches that can be threaded onto a backplate or waist strap.

Using Diver's Weights During a Dive

  • Position Your Body: Once weighted, align your body horizontally to achieve neutral buoyancy.
  • Check Your Balance: If your legs are floating, you may require more weight. Conversely, if your hips are sinking, you likely have too much weight. Distributing diver's weights evenly can help alleviate side-to-side pulling.
  • Monitor and Adjust: Be mindful of your air tank level; it becomes lighter as you consume air, which will alter your overall buoyancy throughout the dive.

Safety

  • Know How to Release: Familiarise yourself with quick-release methods for your specific weight system (belt or BCD) to ensure you can do so instinctively in an emergency.
  • Discuss Release Points: If using integrated BCD pockets or harnesses, ensure both you and your dive buddy are aware of the release mechanisms' locations.
