Our Shad Fishing Trace with Single or Double Hooks increase your chances of a successful catch.

For Shad Fishing Trace Double Hook:

  • Begin by selecting one hook as the "top" hook and thread it through the sardine's spine or nose.
  • Place the "bottom" hook near the tail or through the belly, as shad are known to bite the tail first.
  • To prevent bait from twisting or sliding during casting, secure the sardine's head with cotton or a toothpick.

For Optimal Presentation:

  • Make sure you embed both hooks to maintain a realistic appearance. This helps, whether the shad attacks from the top or bottom and enhances the likelihood of a bite
  • If using dead bait, a toothpick can straighten the hook shank, though this method isn't suitable for live bait.

In South Africa, casting the shad rig into the water and allowing it to drift or sink to the desired depth is key. Utilising a drift float will keep the bait suspended, making it more appealing to shad.

Be patient. Shad typically take the tail first, often running with the bait before returning to swallow it, headfirst.

This fishing technique, tailored for South African waters, maximises your chances of landing a shad.
