For Shad Fishing Trace with Single or Double Hook:

• Place the  hook near the tail or through the belly, as shad are known to bite the tail first. 
• To prevent bait from twisting or sliding during casting, secure the sardine's head with cotton or a toothpick.

For Optimal Presentation:

• Make sure you embed the hook to maintain a realistic appearance and to secure the bait properly. This helps, whether the shad attacks from the top or bottom and enhances the likelihood of a bite
  

In South Africa, casting the shad rig into the water and allowing it to drift or sink to the desired depth is key. Utilising a drift float will keep the bait suspended, making it more appealing to shad. 

Be patient. Shad typically take the tail first, often running with the bait before returning to swallow it, headfirst.
