Our handcrafted Stumpnose Fishing Trace is essential to use with natural baits like sea lice, prawn, or crab. Stumpnose feed near the seabed, so these fresh baits are a win!

Stumpnose / Stumpie Fishing Trace Rigging and Tips:

• Trace Type: Our fixed trace with 3-way swivels is best for rock and surf fishing. You can also use our Blacktail Trace in choppy waters. We use a strong Leader Line for its durability and low visibility. Given stumpnose’s strong teeth, we have chosensharp, durable hooks. Match your bait to our hook size hook size
• Sinker: Use a suitable sinker to keep the bait on the bottom. In strong currents, using a sinker that can move with the surge may be beneficial.
• Optional Floatation: Adding foam or a luminous bead to elevate the bait can enhance visibility and movement.
• Bait Selection: Stumpnose feed on bottom-dwelling invertebrates., so use natural baits including sea lice, cracker shrimp, red prawn and crab, and squid. Chokka (squid) and sardine belly also work well, with chokka being more durable in strong currents. A prawn and chokka combo is great for Natal stumpnose.
• Location: Aim for sandbanks, rocky ledges, and shallow reefs with moving water. Juveniles are often in estuaries.
• Casting: Cast into your target area and let the sinker settle.
• Bite Detection: Stumpnose bites are subtle; braided line can help transmit bites effectively.
• Tide: Fishing during a pushing tide and placing your bait on a bank can boost results.
• Retrieve/Movement: A running sinker allows the bait to move with the current. If using a slide trace, gently shake your rod to cover more ground.

Bag and Size Limits

• The daily bag limit is 5 per person and the minimum size limit is 20 cm. The regulations for stumpnose in South Africa are: 
  • Daily bag limit: 5 per person per day.
  • Minimum size limit: 20 cm.
  • Closed season: None.
  • Other regulations: No sale of recreational species. 

You may also want to be aware of the overall cumulative bag limit of 10 fish per person per day for all species combined, which applies unless the individual species bag limit is greater than 10.
